Minor Ailments We Treat at Kingsland Pharmacy

Coughs and Colds

Most coughs and colds are viral and clear up within one to two weeks. Our pharmacist can recommend the right treatment for your specific type of cough and advise on when a persistent cough needs further attention.

Hay Fever and Allergic Rhinitis

Blocked nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing can make daily life miserable. We can recommend antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops suited to your symptoms and advise on next steps if over-the-counter options are not working.

Headaches and Mild Pain Relief

The right pain relief depends on the type of headache you have. Our pharmacist can recommend the correct analgesic, advise on dosing, and flag whether a pattern of headaches is worth discussing with a GP.

Note: We provide interim advice and pharmacy-level treatment only. We do not diagnose or treat chronic or complex headache conditions.

Digestive Issues

Digestive problems are common, often uncomfortable, and sometimes difficult to talk about. Our pharmacists are used to having these conversations. There is no need to feel awkward about asking for help.

Diarrhoea

We can recommend appropriate treatment and advise on rehydration. If symptoms last more than 48 hours or are accompanied by blood or severe pain, we will direct you to further care.

Indigestion and Heartburn

We can recommend antacids and advise on dietary changes. Persistent or worsening symptoms should be reviewed by a GP.

Constipation

We can recommend suitable laxatives and advise on diet and lifestyle changes that make a real difference.

Upset Stomach

Whether it is nausea, bloating, or general discomfort, we can suggest the most appropriate remedy for your situation.

Skin Conditions

Minor skin conditions are one of the most common reasons people visit a pharmacy. Our pharmacists can assess the skin condition you are dealing with and recommend appropriate treatments.

Mild Eczema

We can recommend emollients and appropriate topical treatments to manage flare-ups and advise on when to see a GP for prescription-strength options.

Athlete's Foot

A common and very treatable fungal infection. We can recommend antifungal treatments and advise on preventing recurrence.

Cold Sores

Antiviral creams work best at the first sign of tingling. We can recommend the right product and advise on managing outbreaks.

Verrucae and Warts

We can recommend salicylic acid treatments, cryotherapy products, and advise on the most effective approach for your situation.

Mouth Conditions

Mouth Ulcers

We can recommend gels and mouthwashes to ease discomfort. An ulcer that has not healed after three weeks should be checked by a dentist or GP.

Toothache

We can recommend pain relief to manage discomfort while you wait for a dental appointment and advise on emergency dental access in Southampton if needed.

Note: Toothache requires dental assessment. Our pharmacist provides interim pain management advice only.

Eye Conditions

We can assess conjunctivitis, dry eyes, and minor irritation and recommend appropriate drops or treatment. If you have eye pain, vision changes, or light sensitivity, we will direct you to urgent care immediately.

Note: We do not diagnose or treat serious eye conditions. Any symptoms suggesting a more serious problem will be referred to the appropriate service.

Threadworms

Threadworms are common, especially in school-age children, and spread easily through households. Treatment with mebendazole is straightforward and we recommend treating the whole household at the same time.

Note: Mebendazole is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please inform our pharmacist if this applies to you.

Nappy Rash and Paediatric Fever

Children get ill more often than adults, and it can be hard to know when to worry and when to manage things at home. Our pharmacists have experience advising parents on common childhood conditions and will always tell you clearly when something needs to be seen by a doctor.

Nappy Rash

We can recommend barrier creams and antifungal treatments where needed. Severe or spreading rashes should be seen by a GP.

Paediatric Fever

We can advise on the right doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen for your child's age and weight and tell you clearly when a fever needs urgent medical attention.

Note: We provide advice on fever management only. Any child with concerning symptoms will be directed to appropriate emergency or urgent care services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment for a minor ailments consultation?

No. Walk-ins are welcome at Kingsland Pharmacy during opening hours. If you prefer to plan ahead, you can call us before visiting. Most consultations take between five and fifteen minutes.

The consultation with our pharmacist is free of charge, with any recommended medicines available to purchase at standard retail prices. NHS prescription exemptions and pre-payment certificates do not apply to over-the-counter purchases. If you need an NHS prescription, our pharmacist will advise and direct you accordingly.

The NHS Pharmacy First service covers seven specific conditions where pharmacists are authorised to prescribe NHS medicines directly, following a structured clinical assessment. The minor ailments service is broader and covers a wider range of common conditions using over-the-counter and pharmacy medicines. Some conditions are treated under both services depending on the clinical situation. Our pharmacist will explain which applies to you.

Yes. We see children of all ages for minor ailments. For very young infants, we will always advise caution and refer to a GP or urgent care service if there is any doubt about the seriousness of the condition. For conditions like nappy rash, paediatric fever, and threadworms we have clear guidelines on when pharmacy treatment is appropriate and when further assessment is needed.

If your condition requires a prescription medicine that falls outside what a pharmacist can supply directly, we will advise you to see your GP or, in urgent cases, direct you to the appropriate urgent care service. We will not leave you without a clear next step.

For standard over-the-counter minor ailments consultations, there is no automatic notification to your GP. If we refer you onwards or if your case has clinical significance, we may advise that your GP is informed. Your pharmacist will discuss this with you.

If you have chest pain, difficulty breathing, sudden severe headache, signs of stroke, high fever that is not responding to treatment, signs of a serious allergic reaction, or any condition that is rapidly worsening, please call 999 or go to A&E directly. Our pharmacists are trained to recognise red flag symptoms and will always direct you to the right service if we have any concern.

The list on this page covers the most common conditions we see. If you are unsure whether we can help with something, the best thing to do is call us or come in. Our pharmacists will assess you and either help or direct you to the most appropriate service.
