Decide whether you want a full NHS Health Check, a blood pressure check, a cholesterol check, or another specific test. If you are not sure which one is right for you, call us or come in and our pharmacist will help you choose.
Book your appointment online, by phone, or in person at Kingsland Pharmacy. Walk-ins are welcome for blood pressure and cholesterol checks. Full NHS Health Checks require a booked appointment to allow enough time.
Arrive for your appointment and one of our trained pharmacists will carry out your check. We will explain each test as we go, share your results clearly, and give you written information to take away.
The full NHS Health Check is a free health review for adults aged 40 to 74 who do not have certain pre-existing conditions. It looks at your blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and lifestyle to give you a personal risk score. The check takes around 20 to 30 minutes and you are eligible once every five years.
High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, but it raises your risk of heart attack and stroke. We measure your reading and give you the result straight away. If it is high, we will advise you on next steps and refer you to your GP if needed.
Most people with high cholesterol have no idea their levels are raised. A simple finger-prick test gives you a full cholesterol reading within minutes. Our pharmacist will explain your results and advise on lifestyle changes or further tests if needed.
Carrying excess weight, particularly around the middle, raises your risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. We measure your BMI and waist circumference as part of your full health check. These results are used alongside your other readings to build an accurate picture of your health.
Your cardiovascular risk score shows how likely you are to develop heart disease or have a stroke in the next ten years. It is calculated using your blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, age, and lifestyle factors. Knowing your score gives you the chance to act now, before a problem develops.
For patients aged 65 and over, we include a dementia awareness discussion as part of the NHS Health Check. It covers your personal risk factors and the early signs to watch out for. If we have any concerns, we will advise you to speak with your GP for a more detailed assessment.
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the UK. Many people do not know they are at risk until they have a heart attack. Your NHS Health Check measures blood pressure, cholesterol, and other factors to calculate your personal risk. Small changes to diet, exercise, or medication can significantly reduce that risk when identified early.
A stroke happens when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are two of the biggest risk factors. Both can be identified through your NHS Health Check. Reducing these risk factors can cut your chance of having a stroke significantly.
Type 2 diabetes develops gradually and can go unnoticed for years. Your NHS Health Check looks at your BMI, waist measurement, and lifestyle to assess your risk. Catching a raised risk early means you have time to make changes that can delay or prevent it from developing.
Chronic kidney disease often has no symptoms in its early stages, which is why it goes undetected in so many people. Raised blood pressure and blood sugar — both identified through the NHS Health Check are among the leading risk factors for kidney disease. If your results suggest these risks are elevated, our pharmacist will advise you to speak with your GP, who can arrange appropriate kidney function tests.
You do not always need to book in advance. At Kingsland Pharmacy, we welcome walk-in patients for blood pressure checks and cholesterol checks during opening hours. If you are not sure whether you need a full NHS Health Check or just a quick reading, come in and speak to our pharmacist. We will point you in the right direction.
Walk-in checks are particularly useful if you have a family history of heart disease, have not had your blood pressure checked in a while, or have been feeling unwell and want a quick health review. Most walk-in checks take between five and fifteen minutes.
We see patients from across Southampton, including Shirley, Portswood, Bitterne, Highfield, Swaythling, Bassett, and Woolston. If you are nearby and want a quick health check today, we are open and ready to help.

The NHS Health Check is available to adults aged 40 to 74 who do not have certain pre-existing conditions. The full exclusion list includes conditions such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and atrial fibrillation, as well as patients currently taking statins. If you are not sure whether you qualify, call us and we will check for you.
Yes. The full NHS Health Check, including cholesterol testing, is free for eligible adults aged 40 to 74. Standalone cholesterol checks outside the NHS Health Check are available as a private service.
For most checks, fasting is not required. If you are having a full cholesterol profile that includes a fasting reading, we will let you know when you book. For a standard finger-prick cholesterol check, you do not need to fast.
If any of your results suggest a raised risk or an abnormal reading, our pharmacist will explain what it means in plain language. We will advise you on lifestyle changes and, where appropriate, refer you to your GP for further investigation or treatment. You will not leave without a clear plan.
Your cardiovascular risk score is a percentage that shows how likely you are to have a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years. It is calculated using your age, blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and lifestyle information. A high score does not mean you will definitely have a problem. It means there are steps you can take now to reduce your risk.
