Symptoms of Blocked Ears and When to Seek Treatment

Earwax is completely normal. Your ears produce it to protect the ear canal and keep it clean. The problem starts when too much builds up, or when it gets pushed further in by cotton buds or ear plugs.

When that happens, you will usually know about it. Here are the most common signs that your ears need attention.

Microsuction Ear Wax Removal in Southampton

Microsuction is the safest way to remove earwax. A small suction device clears the wax under direct vision, with no water involved at any point. It is quick, precise, and suitable for most people including those who have had previous ear problems.

At Kingsland Pharmacy in Southampton, most appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes. Prices start from £55 for one ear and from £65 for both ears. We recommend using olive oil drops twice daily for five to seven days before your visit to soften the wax and get the best result.

Microsuction vs Ear Syringing

A lot of people come in asking about ear syringing. It is worth clearing up what that means, because the term gets used loosely and the methods are quite different from one another.

What Does Your Earwax Colour Tell You?

Earwax colour can give you a rough idea of what is going on in your ear. It is not a diagnosis, but it is worth knowing what to look out for. If you are ever unsure, come and speak to our pharmacist.

Dark Brown or Black Earwax

Dark or black wax usually means the wax has been in the ear canal for a long time. It can also appear darker in people who produce drier wax naturally.

Red Earwax

Red-tinged wax could mean there is a small amount of blood present, which may point to a minor scratch or irritation inside the ear canal. If you notice blood in or around your ear, book an appointment to get it checked rather than trying to remove the wax yourself.

White or Very Light Earwax

Very pale or white wax can sometimes be a sign of a fungal infection or dry skin in the ear canal. It is worth getting this checked if it appears alongside itching or discomfort.

Green Earwax

Green wax is often a sign of infection and should not be ignored. If you have green discharge from the ear alongside pain or hearing loss, see your GP before booking earwax removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to use ear drops before my appointment?

Yes, we strongly recommend olive oil drops twice a day for five to seven days before your visit. This softens the wax and makes removal quicker and more comfortable on the day.

Most people find it comfortable, though some notice a mild pressure sensation or find the suction sound a little unusual. If you feel any discomfort, let your pharmacist know and they will stop straight away.

Most appointments take between 15 and 30 minutes including the ear examination. You can go about your day normally straight after the appointment.

Many NHS GP practices in England stopped providing routine earwax removal as a funded service from 2025 onwards. Our private clinic at Kingsland Pharmacy is a fast, accessible alternative with no waiting list.

Yes, both ears can be treated in the same visit if both are suitable for microsuction. We check each ear separately before starting.

Yes. If your ear examination shows signs of infection, a perforated eardrum, or another condition that makes microsuction unsafe, we will not proceed. We will explain what we found and advise you on the right next step.
